Gross Margin vs Markup: Mathematical Conversion, Profit Pricing & Discount Defense

Markup is the percentage added to wholesale cost to determine price, while gross margin is the percentage of revenue retained after deducting cost of goods sold. Mistaking markup for margin results in underpricing and insolvency.

Governing Formula: Margin = Markup / (1 + Markup); Markup = Margin / (1 - Margin)

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can gross margin never reach or exceed 100%?

Gross margin is defined as (Revenue - COGS) / Revenue. For margin to reach 100%, COGS must be zero. If price is finite and cost is positive, margin is mathematically bounded between 0% and 99.99%. Markup, however, has no upper limit.

If a retailer gives a 20% discount on an item marked up 25%, what happens?

They make exactly $0 profit. A 25% markup on a $100 item sets the price to $125. A 20% discount reduces the price by $25 ($125 * 0.20), selling the item at its exact $100 cost.
